Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Reviews

september 25 2010 review by tweaktown

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Conclusion: With the H70 the reviewers were not able to get very much out of an Intel Core i7 980X, but there is probably plenty of headroom in this mobo. It's recommended, not only for its design, but also for the potential performance.

Overclocking: A Core i7 980X was OCed @ 4.368GHz.

Benchmarks:

Temperature, Power Consumption, HyperPi, Lightwave 3D, AutoGK, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, 3D Mark Vantage, Cinebench, Far Cry 2, Lavalys Everest Ultimate, PC mark vantage, Sisoft Sandra. In the gaming benches an AMD Radeon HD5870 V2 Stalker Edition was used.

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Conclusion:

This board is very impressive in terms of overclocking ability and stability, this mobo also has lots of features for the diehard enthusiasts, but the price tag isn't good and the reviewers have no clue why it's been set so high. A few other boards on the market from ASUS, MSI, and EVGA have top overclocking abilities, several PCI-E slots, and other premium features that cost about half the price of the UD9. This mobo is also missing one feature that all other premium overclocking boards have: voltage reading point, on the other hand this board is build solidly, and can withstand the punishment from extreme cooling.

Overclocking:

A final stable overclock of 5.64GHz was reched with an Intel Core i7 980X. With base clock overclocking the reviewers reached a BCLK of 218MHz, a 64% increase. The board has a very good range of BIOS settings for the enthusiasts, this board has great potential. The reviewers installed a moderately-sized Xigmatek Balder and didn't have any issues, the behemoth Noctua NH-D14 will likely pose problems if you have six memory modules installed because it's so large.

Benchmarks:

ATTO Disk Benchmark and HDTune Pro.

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Conclusion:

The basic performance of Gigabyte's latest X58 based mainboard is barely an improvement over the previous X58 boards from ASUS. Bandwidth capabilities of X58 boards were already maxed out before the UD9 showed up. A truly unlocked CPU along with 4 graphic cards are things hardware enthusiast are waiting for. This expenive mobo has a lot of power and a huge potential.

Compared to:

ASUS Rampage II Extreme.

Overclocking:

The reviewers did not perform any overclocking.

Benchmarks:

7zip, BattleForge, Cinebench, DiRT 2, PC mark vantage, x264 HD.

Test Setup:

  • Processor : Intel 965 EE Quad Core
  • Memory : 3GB Corsair DDR3-1333
  • Graphics Card : ASUS GeForce GTX 280

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9

Conclusion:

The board's layout is very good, the onboard cooling performs admirably, it included SATA3, USB3 and a BIOS made for overclocking, this mobo offers an excellent all-round performance. The very high asking price is a bit of a disappointment, taken the lack of performance gained from a four-way HD 5870 configuration into consideration.

Overclocking:

Intel Core i7 980X was OCed with a 20x multiplier in Turbo mode and reached 4.4GHz.

Benchmarks:

HEXUS.PiFast, Geekbench, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Power Consumption, Cinebench, Crysis: Warhead, Elevated, Far Cry 2, H.A.W.X, Sisoft Sandra, wPrime. In the gaming benches an ATI Radeon HD 5870 was used.

Test Setup:

  • Memory: Corsair 12GB (6 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHZ
  • HDD: 120GB OCZ Vertex SSD
  • Optical drive: Generic 24x DVD-RW
  • Case : Corsair Obsidian Series 800D
  • PSU : Corsair HX1000W
  • OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64
