BIOSTAR TA890GXE Reviews

may 14 2010 review by pcstats

BIOSTAR TA890GXE

Conclusion:

This board is a bit of a stripped version, but all-right for a media-center or HTPC, the Radeon HD 4290 supports HDMI 1.3 output and hardware acceleration for BluRay and H.264. The TA890GXE draws very little power when combined with a low TDP processor and the retail price is very low, because of omitting the SidePort memory, no USB 3.0 support and not enough USB 2.0 ports.

Benchmarks:

SYSMark 2007, Sandra, PC Mark Vantage,3D Mark 2006, 3D Mark Vantage, F.E.A.R., Call of Juarez, Crysis, power consumption.

Overclocking:

The reviewer went for Base Clock overclocking with a A Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition they reached a 250MHz BCLK, on an another mobo with the 890GX chipset their result with a BCLK of 285MHz was much higher. The Radeon 4290 IGP was OCed to 975MHz.

Compared to:

ASUS M3A78-T, ASUS M4A785TD-V Evo, ASUS M4A78T-E, ASUS M4A89GTD-Pro, ASUS P5Q-EM, Biostar TF8200 A2+, ECS A780GM-A, Foxconn A690GM2MA, Foxconn A7DA-S, Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H, Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P, Intel DG45ID, MSI 790GM-E65.

Hooking a 1920x1080 monitor to the HDMI port isn't working (will likely have to return the board)--the device "sees" the motherboard, but gets no video or audio--have verified the display/speakers work normally when connected to a different 890GX-based system using the identical cable. No video at all, even during BIOS boot, while another 890GX-based motherboard system works great via HDMI. DVI and VGA ports work fine. If I get this replaced and the replacement works well, I will revisit and change my rating (if possible).

I received the 5.0 version of this board. If you get this version do your self a favor and send it back immediately. I had to have a PS/2 keyboard just to get into bios as it didn't support USB until you did a bios upgrade. Seriously with as mature as that functionality is no board should ship that way. Also the ability to control fan speed via the bios (or from OS using fan speed) is disabled. The only option you have is to turn on/off smart fan. When I connected additional 120mm case fans it would just run them at max rpm no matter what I did. Extremely disappointed in this. The bios update did not fix the fan control issue. I just got lucky that it happen to run the H50 motor at the correct speed.

Other Thoughts: Used this as well as other Biostar/ Giga / boards for Win7 raid. Generally, no s/w drivers have ever been needed as Win7 has native AHCI drivers. Just need to clicked adavanced and raid when you reach that point in setup. I striped them w/o problem. Raid 5 and above, that's diffferent.
